Physical Wellbeing - Natural Ways to cure Insomnia

Insomnia is such a hideous problem, it can literally drive you mad because you’re body is not getting the time it needs to rest and restore and your mind isn’t get the downtime it needs to be quiet and process and you can’t do any spiritual astral projection. The culmination of all of these blockages is very damaging to holistic wellbeing, in short it makes you feel crap, unhinged and very short tempered. This blog will share some natural ways to cure insomnia.

Heinous Insomnia

There is no nice way to experience insomnia, it is a total beast which can appear in my many different forms. On the face of it, one can easily assume insomnia is just the challenge of falling asleep but no, it also means broken sleep or not being able to stay asleep for long enough to achieve a proper rest.

Generally, at breaking point we visit the doctor and beg for pills to shut us down and into sleep. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical medicine comes with side effects, some of which can be dangerous and addictive. And, the type of sleep they offer isn’t clean and crisp, it has a sort of plasticky edge to it and often gives a hangover.

Natural Ways to Cure Insomnia

The Bed of Nails

To what do I refer? This is multi-use acupuncture mat, that does resemble a brightly coloured torture weapon. When I first saw mine, which I’d bought as a gift for my husband, I had serious doubts I’d ever be able to handle the pain from lying on the 1,000 small plastic pricks lying before me. Now I am an old pro and use it every single night to fall asleep and have never has sore tight shoulders since, even with the deluge of crap my life sometimes like to rain down upon me!

The bed of nails works by stimulating your pressure points with its little sharp plastic points, causing the muscles in your body to completely relax. What starts out as pain, quickly morphs into a more than palatable warmth, and ends, depending on which way up you are lying, in complete relaxation or zinging energy.

Your body releases endorphins, stimulating the flow of your life force, making you feel calm, happy and balanced. Which is very useful at 2/3am and you can’t switch your monkey mind off!

This not only gives a good night sleep if you are laid on your back but additionally facilitates a good wake up if you lie on your tummy. The points stimulate the digestive system, which is a lot less invasive than a lot of the methods I’ve been used over the years.

Morning Glory

I hate the morning, I always have because I’m usually achy and feeling rough because of my condition. Getting up is a real drag and has to be accompanied by a series of stretching exercises followed by a hot shower in order to get my system functioning.

Well this mat’s acupressure was a game changer, I do all my exercises upon it, filling me with endorphins not nausea and irritation. I actually feel like I might be happy to be alive.

Insomniac Child

With all this in mind, I tried it on my insomniac daughter.  She finds it extremely difficult to turn off her mind in order to go to sleep but once asleep is virtually un-wakable.

We’ve tested this on many occasions, a notable one was a ‘team’ effort to assemble a wardrobe in her room in her room in the middle of the night,  despite the lights being on and the volume of the angry swearing she didn’t stir.

She surprised me by thoroughly taking to it like a duck to water, she’s also not great with pain, and it helped her to switch off quicker and deeper though didn’t manifest immediate sleep as I’d secretly hoped!

The Biggest Test

The final test was twofold, there was my usual difficulty of getting to sleep on a Sunday night, brought on by the curtailing of my freedom from routine, and trying for sleep flooded with cortisone from a good old-fashioned day of family fighting.

Usually, in either or both of these circumstances, sleep remains elusive and I emerge on Monday mornings like a demonic hag….not last night or this morning though. Last night, the mat induced a much-needed recovery sleep and this morning it saw me feeling good enough to extend the olive branch!

Cheap Ticket to Nirvana

Thus, therefore and now, my message to you is that for just £18.99 this nirvana can be yours. Twice daily sessions of acupuncture to replicate these miraculous effects would be more than double the price.

So, prick yourself crazy and let me know what you think and if you discover anymore wonderful effects!

Essential oils for Insomnia

Because insomnia is not always that simple, and it’s likely that its an old foe, extra tools in your arsenal are most valuable. I recommend essential oils for improving insomnia, I can’t claim they will cure it because as I’ve said before, we need to establish what’s actually causing it. Once we have the cause then they can work very well because they can be finely tuned to you.

Which essential oils work best for sleep

Everyone knows Lavender essential oil is a great one for supporting quality sleep, however she doesn’t wave her magic wand for everyone and some can’t stand her scent.

Alternative sleep essential oils include Melissa essential oil, she can really pull you deep and stop your 2am mind from whirring you away from sleep. She is excellent for those whose insomnia is triggered by food and drink intolerances!

Sweet marjoram essential oil is another gentle soother of the stressed mind and excellent for children. She mixes well with Lavender essential oil.

I favour Vetiver essential oil, not only do I adore her smell she’s really spiritual and totally defrags my mind.

And sometimes, when I am feeling decadent and want to treat myself, I use Frankincense essential oil, which I adore. This deeply spiritual oil gives me rich, enlightened dreams and I usually awake at peace.

How to use essential oils for sleep

I favour my diffuser, which is right next to my bed, I use it before I go to sleep and sometimes when I wake too early. I add around 5 - 10 drops of essential oil at night and that covers both sessions.

At times I will add a few drops to my pillow, this isn’t nearly as effective for penetrating the body and providing quality sleep but it makes my hair smell nice.

I frequently recommend, and do myself, aromatic hot baths with epsom salts and himalayan pink salts. To this I add around 5 drops of whichever sleep essential oil I choose. Once finished and dried, for those with serious insomnia, I recommend applying an essential oil body butter. This nourishing body cream works wonders on any dry or irritating skin condition.
